Dissertation by Design to present the free Scholarly Writing Institute. Dissertation by Design is an organization that works with all scholarly writers, including students, academics, and research professionals. The sessions aims were to enhance academic writing skills and learn more about digital tools, like NVivo and Citavi, that can assist with the writing and publishing process.

Record Engagement
This year’s institute was very popular, with double last year’s registrations, as nearly 6,000 registrations from over 140 countries were recorded. The Scholarly Writing Institute continues to resonate with students’ and researchers who want to further develop their scholarly writing skills.
The four sessions (below) included valuable content around writing, followed by demonstrations of
Citavi and
NVivo, digital tools for analysis and writing.
Citavi, our all-in one writing and reference management software assists with the writing process, making it easier and faster to publish.
NVivo, the most cited qualitative data analysis software is used to analyze literature review references and qualitative data to jump start the writing of your paper, thesis, or dissertation.

Session 1: Developing your Scholarly Voice: How to Paraphrase, Make Claims, and Synthesize the Literature
As a scholar, you can make unique contributions to discourse around topics that matter to you. To do so, you need to grow your scholarly voice. In this session, Writing Coach Desi Richter teaches you how to write in ways that help your voice be heard. Learn how to make claims that are backed by evidence. Discover the power of paraphrasing, and finally, learn how to synthesize (not just summarize) literature that you review. Desi will both model and provide opportunities to practice these three scholarly writing skills. For the digital tools’ demonstration, we will show how Citavi helps you synthesize the literature and how NVivo can assist you in making evidence-based claims.
Session 2: Write, Revise, Rinse and Repeat: The Art of Self-Revising
This session focuses on the art of scholarly revision. Revision is a normal part of your scholarly writing process. As a scholarly writer, you can learn to step back and “re-see” your writing. In this highly practical session, Dr. Desi Richter teaches you how to approach revision in ways that make the process less daunting and more successful. Learn how to move from draft to polished product using Dr. Richter’s revision process. For the digital tools’ demonstration, we will show how Citavi organizes your draft during the revision process and how NVivo helps you organize your categories for your draft.
Session 3: Qualitative Data Analysis
While analyzing qualitative data can be time-consuming, challenging, and messy, there are ways to efficiently navigate the qualitative data analysis process. Research methodologist Dr. Veronica Richard shares tips and strategies for managing your qualitative data and conducting three rounds of basic thematic analysis (initial coding, pattern coding, theming). Analyzing qualitative data is essential for (1) refining future data collection to ensure you are gathering data aligned with your research questions, and (2) writing up your findings. This webinar will help you turn an overwhelming process into a focused process. We will help you understand what you are supposed to do, and we will guide you through the process of how to complete the various cycles of coding and identifying themes. For the digital tools’ demonstration, we will learn how Citavi can be used to collect qualitative data and how NVivo can be used for your coding strategy.
Session 4: From Analysis to Writing
Research methodologist Dr. Veronica Richard shares actionable tips for working with qualitative data. Veronica will help you understand important steps in qualitative data analysis, so you can write about your findings in cogent ways. Planning your writing early in the data analysis process will help you stay organized and convey your findings with clarity. This highly instructive session helps you create and implement a plan for your qualitative data analysis and write-up. For the digital tools’ demonstration, we will see how Citavi organizes your writing tasks and outline, and how NVivo supports the coding and analysis of your data when writing your findings in a Word document.
