Webinar

On-demand

From roadways to environmental, civil engineering disciplines may vary, but they all share a core priority: safety.

Traditionally, safety has been assessed using deterministic methods, like safety factors and margins—often based on averages or arbitrarily chosen conservative values. While the reliability index, a probabilistic measure of safety, has been recognized for decades, its formal integration into civil engineering codes has only recently gained momentum.

Join Naresh C. Samtani, President at NCS GeoResources, LLC, for a webinar where you’ll compare traditional deterministic methods with probabilistic approaches and explore the methods and tools that improve reliability-based design and decision-making in civil engineering.

In this webinar, you’ll learn how to:

  • Move beyond deterministic safety factors by leveraging probabilistic, reliability-based methods
  • Apply appropriate probability distribution functions (PDFs) to better capture uncertainty
  • Use Monte Carlo simulation and correlation modeling to deliver clear, actionable results
  • Employ probabilistic tools to improve design reliability and decision-making

President, NCS GeoResources, LLC

Naresh Samtani is the owner and President of NCS GeoResources, LLC, located in Tucson, Arizona. He is a Board-Certified Geotechnical Engineer and Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He has 40 years of experience and has worked on major infrastructure facilities in many parts of the country, including hundreds of bridges and retaining walls, several ground improvement project, and hundreds of lane-miles of pavements. He has authored or co-authored over 15 manuals for agencies such as the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), as well as research reports for the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) of the Transportation Research Board (TRB). He has helped develop comprehensive design and implementation policies related to bridges, walls, pavements, and scour, with an emphasis on multidisciplinary interaction between geotechnical, structural, drainage, roadway, and construction specialists at both local and national levels. He has developed and implemented reliability-based procedures for geo-structural features. Currently, Naresh focuses on forensic services, expert consultation, education, research, and training.
